November 10-14, 2003, ULRMC Representative and Project Manager of "Biodiversity Indicators for National Use (BINU)" project participated in the 9-th session of Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice (SBSTTA) of the Convention on Biodiversity which took place in Montreal, Canada. The representatives of the national teams of the BINU Project (Kenya, Philippines, Ecuador, and Ukraine), as well as the Project's donors and consultants - UNEP-WCMC and RIVM - reported on current results and experience gained during project implementation. Representatives of the Convention Secretariat, governmental and non-governmental organizations, including Global Environmental Fund (GEF), Ministry of the Environment and Natural Resources of Ukraine (MENRU) and ULRMC participated in these secessions.

The Project Manager of BINU in Ukraine, V. Prydatko, PhD in Biology, presented project results achieved by Ukraine. During a discussion session of this meeting, it became clear that the experience gained by the national teams of this project is very interesting and promising. The presentation, abstract and SBSTTA flyer are presented on the Project's webpage.

In a UNEP/CBD/SBSTTA/9/WG.II/CRP.1 document, dated 11.11.03 and approved by the participants of the 9th SBSTTA session, it was indicated that the project "Biodiversity Indicators for National Use", funded by GEF, "might illustrate how each step proposed in the guidelines for indicator development contained in this document could be carried out in practice and thereby provides lessons on the practical development of biodiversity indicators."
