September, 2005

In September, 2005, at the beginning of a new academic year, the National Agrarian University published a new manual in Ukrainian - "Soil Science with Fundamental Geology" - (648 pages). The publication was enabled by financial support of the UNEP-GEF Project "Biodiversity Indicators for National Use" (BINU), as well as the LLC "Sad". The UNEP-GEF BINU Project support was initiated by the Ukrainian Land and Resource Management Center, which was supported by the Project donor - WCMC.

The book considers rocks, minerals, and grounds forming in terms of up-to-date conceptual background. Based on the latest progress of national and foreign scientists, it outlines soil formation, composition, characteristics, and non-exhausting use issues. A particular section of the book covers top-soil zoning in different soil areas of Ukraine. Considerable attention is focused on soil appraisal methods, economic evaluation of land recourses and the land register system in Ukraine. The manual has examples of thematic maps generated using GIS of the UNEP-GEF BINU Project.

The manual is prepared pursuant to the educational program envisaged for students of agrarian educational institutions of the II-IV accreditation levels, masters and post-graduates of such departments as Agronomic, Agricultural Chemistry and Soil Science, Ecology, Land Surveying, Fruit-and-Vegetable Growing etc. The book will be interesting for scientists, agricultural advisers, as well as specialists-experts of state soil fertility centers, land surveying bodies and the State Service on Land Conservation, and ecologists.
