January 15, 2004 - the Dictionary of Remote Sensing was published. The Dictionary was developed by the Ukrainian Land and Resource Management Center in cooperation with the leading specialists of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine in the field of remote sensing of the earth.
This publication is designed to provide a system of terms, forming a conceptual base of remote sensing, together with their definitions, as well as to provide their analogs in the Russian and English languages.
The Dictionary contains over 1,000 terms on the following topics:
- Basic concepts of remote sensing and geographic information systems (GIS);
- Mathematical and physical basics of remote sensing and GIS;
- Systems of aerial and space imagery creation;
- Systems of remote sensing data analysis and interpretation;
- Main photogrammetric terms and digital photogrammetry;
- Decision-making methods;
- Spatial data bases and cadastre;
- Geo-positioning systems (GPS).
This is the first time the Dictionary on such themes is developed in Ukraine. For its development, up-to-date glossaries of terms, relevant state standards, scientific publications on remote sensing and GIS, etc. were used. The main criterion for a term selection and its definition development was their correspondence to the modern scientific and technical development of remote sensing systems and GIS.
The draft Dictionary was considered at the meeting of the Scientific Council of the Center of Aero-Space Research within the Institute of Geography Sciences under the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and was highly rated by the specialists.
The Dictionary was also highly appraised by I. Makarenko, Head of the State Service of Geodesy, Cartography and Cadastre of Ukraine, and S. Voitenko, Dean of the GIS and Aerial Management Department of the Kyiv National University of Construction and Architecture. The Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine recommends the Dictionary as an educational aid.
