September 11-20, 2003 - ULRMC specialists together with the specialists from the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) conducted a training on software, models and database use for the Specialists of Dnipro Basin Water Resources Department of the State Water Management Committee of Ukraine (SWMC), departments of the Ministry of the Environmental Protection of Ukraine and SWMC. The training was conducted in connection with ULRMC's project on "Water Quality Program Assessment and Abatement Dnipro Estuary Project - Phase 2," an international technical assistance project of EPA, registered with the Ministry of Economy and European Integration Issues of Ukraine.

The principal aim of the EPA-sponsored project is to improve water resources management and Dnipro Estuary monitoring through the implementation of new methods, technologies and models, using the results of the earlier work performed in the EPA-supported Kaniv Reservoir project and Phase I of this Dnipro Estuary initiative. The Dnipro Estuary project includes activities designed to improve and supplement the technical capabilities of MENRU laboratories; to study Dnipro Estuary water quality with the organization of expeditions; to adapt mathematical models for water resources management; to develop a program for water resources protection in the Kherson and Mykolayiv Oblasts; to train MENRU specialists in model application; and to transfer the developed models to MENRU departments for their use.
