ULRMC Signs a Service Agreement with UNEP-WCMC

March 1, 2003 - ULRMC signed a Service Agreement with the United Nations Environment Programme - World Conservation Monitoring Centre (UNEP-WCMC), United Kingdom, on implementing the Biodiversity Indicators for National Use project (UNEP GEF: GF/2712-02-4446) in Ukraine.

The Ministry of the Environment and Natural Resources of Ukraine (MENRU) and the UNEP-WCMC, United Kingdom, has cooperated for several years to assess priorities in biodiversity conservation issues in Ukraine. During the 4th Conference of the Parties of Convention on Biological Diversity in Bratislava, Slovakia in May 1998, MENRU and UNEP-WCMC representatives actively cooperated to develop a Biodiversity Indicators for National Use project with the direct participation of Ukraine, Philippines, Ecuador and Kenya, to be funded by the Global Environmental Facility (GEF), United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) and other donors. This cooperation resulted in the inclusion of Ukraine in the Biodiversity Indicators for National Use project, with Ukraine focusing on the development of indicators for agroecosystems.

On January 10, 2003, MENRU and the UNEP-WCMC, United Kingdom, signed a Protocol of Cooperation concerning the implementation of the Project and recognized the beneficiary of the Project to be MENRU. The Ukrainian implementer of the project is assigned to be the ULRMC.

Both parties, ULRMC and UNEP-WCMC, confirm their readiness to contribute to the successful implementation of this project, aimed at the development and selection of agro-biodiversity indicators for use in Ukraine, taking into account national and international experience. The project is funded through December, 2004.
