Expert Group on Biodiversity Indicators Drafts Action Plan for Ukraine

January 31, 2003 - An expert group from leading Ukrainian and international agencies, including potential stakeholders, began the process of developing biodiversity indicators for agricultural areas at a workshop "Biodiversity Indicators for National Use".

The participants of a three-day ULRMC-hosted workshop also discussed and approved the draft "Project Work Plan 2003/2004" and a draft Proposal on Interdepartmental Working Group for the project.

The workshop was convened in conjunction with the UNEP/GEF Biodiversity Indicators for National Use Project that was recently launched in the four participating countries of Ecuador, Kenya, Philippines and Ukraine, where several indicator frameworks will be tested for specific ecosystems and replicated worldwide. In Ukraine, ULRMC was competitively selected as the main implementer of partner efforts in identifying indicators for measuring agrobiodiversity.

A total of 36 participants attended the workshop, including members of the UNEP World Conservation Monitoring Center (UNEP - WCMC) in the UK and the National Institute of Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) in the Netherlands. The list of attendees also includes the World Bank/Kyiv, the United Nations Development Program (UNDP/Kyiv), representatives of the State Ecological Inspection and State Service of Protected Areas under the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources of Ukraine, the Environment and Resources Research Institute of Ukraine (Kyiv), the State Committee of Statistics, the State Land Management Committee, the Ukrainian Academy of Agrarian Science. The results developed at the workshop are being applied by partners of the project in Ecuador and the Philippines.

ULRMC is currently designing an online Client Service to meet the needs of project team members interested in receiving project results and document updates.
